The Commissioner

John McNeill was appointed Police Complaints Commissioner for Scotland by Kenny MacAskill the Cabinet Secretary for Justice and took up his post on 17 August 2009.

Police Complaints Commissioner for Scotland

As Commissioner he provides independent scrutiny of the way that the police handle non-criminal complaints from the public.

He has the power to direct police forces to re-examine any complaints that he considers have not been dealt with properly.

The uniqueness of complaints about the police requires that the oversight mechanism is not only independent of the police, but also dedicated and specialised.
